Metallurgical Characteristics
AISI M35 is a tungsten-molybdenum type high speed steel enhanced with 5% cobalt addition. The cobalt significantly improves hot hardness retention, wear resistance, and cutting performance at elevated temperatures. The steel exhibits a complex carbide structure consisting of MC (vanadium-rich), M6C (tungsten-molybdenum-rich), and M23C6 (chromium-rich) carbides distributed in a martensitic matrix.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith's optimized heat treatment includes preheating to 850°C, austenitizing at 1210-1230°C in protective atmosphere, followed by quenching in oil or salt bath. Tempering is performed at 540-580°C for 2-3 cycles to achieve desired hardness of 64-67 HRC. Our controlled atmosphere furnaces ensure minimal decarburization and optimal microstructure.
Manufacturing Process
Our production process begins with vacuum induction melting (VIM) of premium raw materials, followed by electroslag remelting (ESR) for enhanced cleanliness. The ingots undergo controlled forging and rolling operations to achieve optimal grain flow and carbide distribution. Advanced powder metallurgy routes are also available for superior homogeneity and fine carbide structure.
Quality Standards & Testing
All AISI M35 products comply with ASTM A600 specifications and undergo comprehensive quality control including chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical property testing, microstructural examination, and ultrasonic inspection.
