JIS SS400 is a low-carbon structural steel with a predominantly ferritic-pearlitic microstructure. The controlled carbon content (≤0.050%) ensures excellent weldability and formability, while the manganese content provides adequate strength and toughness. The steel exhibits fine grain structure through controlled rolling processes, contributing to its balanced mechanical properties.
Manufacturing Process
MetalZenith produces JIS SS400 using advanced electric arc furnace steelmaking followed by ladle refining for precise chemistry control. The steel undergoes continuous casting to ensure homogeneous structure and minimal segregation. Hot rolling is performed with controlled finishing temperatures to achieve optimal grain refinement and mechanical properties. Optional normalizing heat treatment at 900-950°C provides stress relief and improved dimensional stability.
Heat Treatment Options
While JIS SS400 is typically supplied in the hot-rolled condition, various heat treatment options are available: Normalizing (900-950°C) for stress relief and grain refinement, annealing (650-700°C) for improved machinability, and stress relieving (550-650°C) for dimensional stability in welded structures.
Quality Standards & Testing
All JIS SS400 products undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, tensile testing per JIS Z 2241, impact testing per JIS Z 2242, and ultrasonic inspection per JIS G 0801. MetalZenith maintains full traceability from raw materials through final inspection, with test certificates provided per EN 10204 3.1 standards. Additional testing such as magnetic particle inspection, hardness mapping, and microstructural analysis is available upon request.
