Steel Angle Weight Calculator

Calculate steel angle weight for equal and unequal leg angles. Enter the two legs and the thickness — the calculator uses the standard area formula (a + b − t) × t.

Angle weight

Nominal weight from dimensions and density. Actual weight varies with mill tolerance and coating — check the mill certificate for critical use.

Equal angle weights

Angle kg/m (formula) lb/ft
25×25×3 mm 1.11 0.74
30×30×3 mm 1.34 0.90
40×40×4 mm 2.39 1.60
50×50×5 mm 3.73 2.51
60×60×6 mm 5.37 3.61
65×65×6 mm 5.84 3.92
75×75×6 mm 6.78 4.56
80×80×8 mm 9.55 6.41
100×100×10 mm 14.91 10.02
120×120×12 mm 21.48 14.43
150×150×15 mm 33.56 22.55

Published mill tables run about 1–2% heavier than the simple formula because rolled angles have a root radius and toe fillets that the (a + b − t) × t approximation ignores.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate the weight of a steel angle?

Cross-sectional area is approximately (leg A + leg B - thickness) x thickness. Multiply by length and by density 7.85 g/cm3.

Does it work for unequal angles?

Yes — enter the two different leg lengths.

Why is my supplier's weight slightly higher?

Rolled angles have a root radius and toe fillets that add a little material beyond the simple rectangle approximation, typically 1-2%.

Equal Angle Weight Formula

Weight = (A + B - t) × t × density × length

Where:
A = Length of first leg
B = Length of second leg
t = Thickness
density = Material density
length = Length of angle section
