Key conversions to remember

  • 1 ksi = 6.895 MPa  ·  1 MPa = 145.0 psi  ·  1 MPa = 1 N/mm²
  • 1 inch = 25.4 mm  ·  1 mil = 0.0254 mm
  • °F = °C × 9/5 + 32  ·  K = °C + 273.15
  • 1 kg = 2.20462 lb  ·  1 tonne = 1.10231 US ton

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MPa to ksi?

Divide MPa by 6.895. For example 500 MPa is 72.5 ksi. To go the other way multiply ksi by 6.895.

Is N/mm2 the same as MPa?

Yes, exactly. One newton per square millimetre equals one megapascal, which is why steel strength is quoted interchangeably in both units.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

F = C x 9/5 + 32. For temperature differences (such as a thermal expansion delta-T) use only the 9/5 factor without the +32 offset.

What is a mil in sheet metal?

One mil is one thousandth of an inch (0.001 in = 0.0254 mm). It is commonly used for coating thickness rather than sheet gauge.
