Metallurgical Characteristics
EH40 is a normalized fine-grained structural steel with a predominantly ferritic-pearlitic microstructure. The controlled rolling process followed by normalizing heat treatment at 900-950°C results in refined grain size (ASTM 8-10) and optimal precipitation of microalloying elements, providing excellent strength-toughness balance.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith employs controlled normalizing at 920±20°C followed by air cooling to achieve uniform microstructure and mechanical properties. Optional tempering at 580-620°C can be applied for enhanced toughness in critical applications. Our computer-controlled furnaces ensure precise temperature uniformity and heating rates.
Manufacturing Process
Production begins with electric arc furnace melting followed by ladle refining and vacuum degassing to achieve ultra-low sulfur content. Continuous casting produces high-quality slabs which undergo controlled rolling with precise temperature control. Final normalizing treatment ensures optimal mechanical properties and stress relief.
Quality Standards & Testing
All EH40 products undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis, tensile testing, Charpy V-notch impact testing at -40°C and -60°C, hardness measurement, and ultrasonic inspection. Third-party certification from major classification societies ensures compliance with offshore construction requirements and international standards.
Weldability & Fabrication
EH40 exhibits excellent weldability with carbon equivalent (CEV) typically ≤ 0.41%. Preheating at 100-150°C is recommended for thick sections. Post-weld heat treatment may be required for stress relief in critical applications. The steel is suitable for all conventional welding processes including SMAW, GMAW, SAW, and FCAW.
