Steel Plate Weight Calculator
This free steel plate weight calculator estimates the weight of a steel plate or sheet from its thickness, length, width, and grade. It is useful for cutting lists, freight, and cost planning.
How it works & formula
Plate weight is W = length × width × thickness × density. With steel density 7,850 kg/m³, a 1 mm thick plate weighs 7.85 kg per square metre, so W (kg) = area (m²) × thickness (mm) × 7.85.
Reference data
Weight per square metre by plate thickness:
| Thickness | Weight (kg/m²) | Weight (lb/ft²) |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm | 23.6 | 4.83 |
| 6 mm | 47.1 | 9.65 |
| 10 mm | 78.5 | 16.1 |
| 12 mm | 94.2 | 19.3 |
| 20 mm | 157 | 32.2 |
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate steel plate weight?
Multiply length x width x thickness x density. A shortcut: weight (kg) = area in square metres x thickness in mm x 7.85, because 1 mm of steel plate weighs 7.85 kg per square metre.
How much does a 10 mm steel plate weigh per square metre?
A 10 mm thick steel plate weighs about 78.5 kg per square metre, or roughly 16.1 lb per square foot.
What density is used for steel plate?
Standard carbon steel density of 7,850 kg per cubic metre (7.85 g/cm3). Stainless grades are slightly higher, around 7,900-8,000 kg/m3.
Can I use it for chequered or tread plate?
For plain plate the result is accurate. Chequered (tread) plate is a few percent heavier because of the raised pattern, so add a small allowance.
