AISI M42 is a cobalt-bearing high speed steel with exceptional hot hardness retention and wear resistance. The high cobalt content (8%) provides superior red hardness, maintaining cutting edge integrity at elevated temperatures up to 600°C. The steel contains a complex carbide structure including MC (vanadium-rich), M6C (molybdenum-rich), and M23C6 carbides that contribute to its outstanding wear resistance.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith's precision heat treatment process involves preheating to 850°C, austenitizing at 1220-1240°C in protective atmosphere, followed by quenching in oil or salt bath. Triple tempering at 540-560°C ensures optimal secondary hardness and dimensional stability. Our computer-controlled furnaces maintain temperature uniformity within ±5°C throughout the treatment cycle.
Manufacturing Excellence
MetalZenith employs vacuum induction melting (VIM) followed by electroslag remelting (ESR) to achieve superior cleanliness and homogeneity. Our powder metallurgy route offers enhanced carbide distribution and improved transverse properties. Advanced forging and rolling processes ensure optimal grain structure and mechanical properties in all directions.
