Product Overview
Metallurgical Characteristics
EN 18NiCrMo14-6 is a low-carbon, high-alloy case hardening steel with excellent hardenability due to its nickel, chromium, and molybdenum content. The steel exhibits a fine-grained ferritic-pearlitic microstructure in the annealed condition, transforming to martensite in the case and tempered martensite in the core after proper heat treatment. The controlled carbon content ensures optimal case-to-core hardness gradient while maintaining core toughness.
Heat Treatment Process
Case hardening involves carburizing at 900-950°C for 4-12 hours depending on required case depth, followed by direct quenching or reheat quenching from 820-850°C in oil or polymer. Tempering is performed at 150-200°C to achieve optimal surface hardness of 58-62 HRC. Core properties are developed through quenching from 850°C and tempering at 550-650°C to achieve 30-40 HRC core hardness with excellent toughness.
Manufacturing Process
MetalZenith produces EN 18NiCrMo14-6 through electric arc furnace melting followed by ladle refining and vacuum degassing to achieve superior cleanliness. The steel is cast into ingots or continuously cast billets, then hot forged or rolled to final dimensions. Controlled cooling and intermediate annealing ensure optimal microstructure and machinability. Advanced quality control includes spectroscopic analysis, mechanical testing, and ultrasonic inspection.
Quality Standards and Compliance
All EN 18NiCrMo14-6 products comply with EN 10084, DIN 17210, and equivalent international standards. MetalZenith maintains comprehensive quality management systems certified to ISO 9001:2015, AS9100D, and IATF 16949. Each batch undergoes rigorous testing including chemical composition verification, mechanical property testing, microstructural examination, and dimensional inspection with full traceability documentation provided.
