Product Overview
Metallurgical Characteristics
AISI 5160 is a medium-carbon, low-alloy steel with chromium as the primary alloying element. The chromium content enhances hardenability, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance while maintaining excellent spring properties. The steel exhibits a predominantly pearlitic microstructure in the annealed condition, transforming to tempered martensite after proper heat treatment.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith employs precise heat treatment protocols for AISI 5160: Austenitizing at 845-870°C, followed by oil quenching to achieve full hardness (58-62 HRC). Tempering is performed at 400-540°C depending on desired hardness and spring properties. Our controlled atmosphere furnaces ensure uniform heating and prevent decarburization.
Manufacturing Excellence
Our production process begins with electric arc furnace melting using premium scrap and alloy additions. Secondary refining through ladle metallurgy ensures precise chemistry control and inclusion modification. Hot rolling is performed using computer-controlled mills with optimized reduction schedules to achieve desired mechanical properties and surface quality.
Quality Standards & Testing
MetalZenith maintains strict adherence to ASTM A29, SAE J403, and ISO 683-1 standards. Comprehensive testing includes chemical analysis via optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical testing per ASTM E8, hardness verification, microstructure examination, and dimensional inspection. Spring deflection testing and fatigue analysis ensure optimal performance characteristics.
Applications Engineering
AISI 5160's exceptional elastic limit and fatigue resistance make it ideal for automotive leaf springs, agricultural equipment, hand tools, and industrial machinery components. The steel's ability to maintain spring properties at elevated temperatures extends its application range to demanding environments requiring reliable performance under cyclic loading conditions.
