22MnB5 is a low-alloy manganese-boron steel specifically designed for hot forming and press hardening applications. The addition of boron significantly enhances hardenability, allowing for complete martensitic transformation during rapid cooling from austenitizing temperatures. The steel exhibits excellent formability in the as-delivered condition while achieving ultra-high strength after press hardening.
Heat Treatment Process
The press hardening process involves heating the steel to 900-950°C, forming at elevated temperature, and immediate quenching in the die to achieve cooling rates of 30-50°C/s. This rapid cooling transforms the austenitic microstructure to martensite, resulting in tensile strengths exceeding 1500 MPa. MetalZenith provides detailed heat treatment guidelines to optimize the press hardening process.
Manufacturing Process
MetalZenith produces 22MnB5 through controlled hot rolling followed by precise cooling to achieve the desired microstructure and mechanical properties. Our advanced process control ensures consistent chemical composition and eliminates segregation. Optional Al-Si coating can be applied to prevent oxidation and decarburization during the hot forming process.
