Product Overview
Metallurgical Characteristics
EN S235 is a non-alloy structural steel with a ferritic-pearlitic microstructure, providing excellent balance of strength, ductility, and weldability. The steel exhibits fine grain structure achieved through controlled rolling and cooling processes, ensuring consistent mechanical properties throughout the material thickness.
Manufacturing Process
MetalZenith produces EN S235 using electric arc furnace steelmaking followed by ladle metallurgy treatment for precise chemistry control. The steel undergoes continuous casting, hot rolling with controlled cooling, and optional normalizing treatment. Our advanced process control systems monitor temperature, rolling parameters, and cooling rates to ensure optimal microstructure development.
Heat Treatment Options
EN S235 is typically supplied in hot-rolled condition (+AR) or normalized condition (+N). Normalizing at 880-920°C followed by air cooling refines the grain structure and improves mechanical properties. Stress relief annealing at 580-650°C can be performed to reduce residual stresses from welding or forming operations.
Welding and Fabrication
Excellent weldability with all conventional welding processes including SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, and SAW. Carbon equivalent (CEV) typically ≤ 0.42%, ensuring good weldability without preheating for most applications. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not required for structural applications.
Quality Standards and Testing
MetalZenith maintains strict quality control per EN 10025-2 requirements. All products undergo chemical analysis, tensile testing, impact testing, and dimensional inspection. Non-destructive testing including ultrasonic inspection is available upon request. Full material traceability and 3.1 certification provided with each shipment.
