ASTM A588

ASTM A588

ASTM A588 High-Strength Low-Alloy Weathering Steel

ASTM A588 is a high-strength, low-alloy structural steel specifically designed for atmospheric corrosion resistance. This weathering steel, also known as Corten steel equivalent, forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to weather conditions, eliminating the need for painting in many applications.

Technical Specifications

Product Overview

Metallurgical Characteristics

ASTM A588 is a high-strength, low-alloy (HSLA) steel with enhanced atmospheric corrosion resistance achieved through controlled additions of copper, chromium, nickel, and phosphorus. The steel develops a protective patina layer of stable rust that acts as a barrier against further corrosion, providing 4-8 times better corrosion resistance than conventional carbon steel.

Manufacturing Process

MetalZenith produces ASTM A588 using electric arc furnace steelmaking followed by ladle refining for precise chemistry control. The steel undergoes controlled rolling at temperatures between 1050-1200°C, followed by accelerated cooling to achieve optimal microstructure consisting of fine-grained ferrite-pearlite with precipitation strengthening from microalloying elements.

Heat Treatment Options

While ASTM A588 is typically supplied in the hot-rolled condition, stress relief annealing at 580-650°C may be performed for heavy sections. Normalizing at 900-950°C can be applied to improve toughness and homogenize microstructure. Welding preheat of 150-200°C is recommended for thick sections.

Quality Standards & Testing

All ASTM A588 products undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, tensile testing per ASTM A370, Charpy impact testing, and atmospheric corrosion resistance evaluation. Non-destructive testing includes ultrasonic inspection for internal soundness and dimensional verification using coordinate measuring machines.
