The controlled carbon content (≤ 0.18%) ensures excellent weldability while maintaining adequate strength levels. The addition of manganese enhances hardenability and strength, while silicon acts as a deoxidizer and contributes to solid solution strengthening.
Manufacturing Process
MetalZenith produces JIS SM490 through advanced steelmaking processes including electric arc furnace melting, ladle refining, and continuous casting. The steel undergoes controlled rolling at temperatures between 900-1100°C, followed by accelerated cooling to achieve optimal grain refinement and mechanical properties. Thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP) ensures consistent microstructure and enhanced toughness.
Heat Treatment Options
While JIS SM490 is typically supplied in the as-rolled condition, various heat treatment options are available including normalizing (900-950°C), stress relieving (580-650°C), and controlled cooling treatments. These processes can be tailored to specific application requirements for enhanced mechanical properties or stress relief.
Welding Characteristics
The low carbon equivalent (Ceq ≤ 0.44%) of JIS SM490 provides excellent weldability with minimal preheating requirements. The steel is compatible with various welding processes including SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, and SAW. Proper welding procedures ensure full strength joints without significant heat-affected zone degradation.
Quality Standards & Testing

Comprehensive testing includes chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical testing per JIS Z 2241, Charpy impact testing at specified temperatures, and ultrasonic inspection for internal soundness.
