Product Overview

Metallurgical Characteristics

JIS S65C is a eutectoid high-carbon steel with excellent hardenability and spring properties. The steel exhibits a pearlitic microstructure in the annealed condition, consisting of alternating layers of ferrite and cementite. Upon quenching from the austenitic temperature range (820-860°C), the steel transforms to martensite, providing maximum hardness and strength. Subsequent tempering at 400-500°C develops the optimal combination of strength, elasticity, and toughness required for spring applications.

Heat Treatment Process

MetalZenith employs controlled atmosphere furnaces for heat treatment operations. The recommended heat treatment cycle includes: austenitizing at 830-850°C, oil quenching to achieve 60-64 HRC, followed by tempering at 420-480°C to reach the desired hardness of 45-52 HRC. This process ensures optimal spring characteristics while maintaining adequate toughness and fatigue resistance. Stress relieving at 200-250°C may be performed after forming operations.

Manufacturing Process

Our production process begins with electric arc furnace melting using high-quality scrap and alloy additions. The molten steel undergoes ladle refining and vacuum degassing to minimize inclusions and achieve precise chemical composition. Continuous casting produces billets with excellent surface quality and internal soundness. Hot rolling and controlled cooling optimize the microstructure, while cold drawing operations provide superior dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
