Technical Specifications

Product Overview

Metallurgical Characteristics

AISI 316L is an austenitic stainless steel with a face-centered cubic crystal structure. The low carbon content (≤0.030%) prevents carbide precipitation during welding, eliminating the need for post-weld annealing. The addition of molybdenum (2-3%) significantly enhances corrosion resistance, particularly against chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion.

Manufacturing Process

MetalZenith produces AISI 316L through vacuum induction melting followed by electroslag remelting to achieve exceptional cleanliness and homogeneity. The steel undergoes controlled hot rolling at temperatures between 1050-1200°C, followed by solution annealing at 1040-1100°C and rapid cooling to retain the austenitic structure. Cold rolling and precision finishing operations ensure dimensional accuracy and surface quality.

Heat Treatment

Solution annealing is performed at 1040-1100°C followed by rapid cooling in water or air. This treatment dissolves carbides and achieves optimal corrosion resistance. The steel cannot be hardened by heat treatment but can be work-hardened through cold deformation. Stress relief annealing at 850-900°C may be applied to reduce residual stresses without compromising corrosion resistance.

Quality Standards & Testing

All AISI 316L products undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis per ASTM E1019, mechanical property testing per ASTM A370, and corrosion resistance evaluation per ASTM A262. Non-destructive testing includes ultrasonic inspection, dye penetrant testing, and eddy current examination. MetalZenith maintains full traceability from raw materials through final inspection, ensuring compliance with aerospace, nuclear, and pharmaceutical industry requirements.
