Technical Specifications

Product Overview

Metallurgical Characteristics

W1 is a plain carbon tool steel with high carbon content (0.90-1.05%) that provides excellent hardenability through water quenching. The steel exhibits a pearlitic microstructure in the annealed condition, transforming to martensite upon rapid cooling from austenitic temperatures. MetalZenith's controlled melting process ensures uniform carbide distribution and minimal segregation.

Heat Treatment Process

Annealing: Heat to 750-780°C, hold for sufficient time, then cool slowly in furnace to achieve 200-250 HB hardness. Hardening: Austenitize at 760-790°C, then quench rapidly in water to achieve maximum hardness of 64-66 HRC. Tempering: Reheat to 150-300°C depending on required hardness and toughness balance. MetalZenith provides detailed heat treatment guidelines for optimal performance.

Manufacturing Process

MetalZenith produces W1 steel using electric arc furnace melting with precise carbon addition and temperature control. The molten steel undergoes ladle refining to remove impurities and adjust chemistry. Hot rolling is performed within controlled temperature ranges to achieve desired mechanical properties and grain structure. Cold finishing operations include drawing, turning, and grinding to meet precise dimensional requirements.

Quality Standards and Testing

All W1 steel products undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical property evaluation through tensile and hardness testing, and metallographic examination for microstructure verification. MetalZenith maintains compliance with international standards including ASTM A686, EN ISO 4957, and JIS G4401, providing full material traceability and certification documentation.
