JIS SUS440C is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel with a complex microstructure consisting of martensite matrix with dispersed chromium carbides. The high carbon content (0.95-1.20%) enables exceptional hardness after heat treatment, while the chromium content (16-18%) provides adequate corrosion resistance. The steel exhibits excellent wear resistance due to the presence of hard M23C6 and M7C3 carbides.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith employs precise heat treatment protocols for optimal performance. Annealing is performed at 850-900°C followed by slow cooling to achieve maximum softness for machining. Hardening involves austenitizing at 1010-1065°C, followed by oil or air quenching. Tempering at 150-200°C achieves maximum hardness (58-62 HRC), while higher tempering temperatures (300-500°C) provide improved toughness with slightly reduced hardness.
Manufacturing Process Excellence
Our production process begins with carefully selected raw materials melted in electric arc furnaces, followed by vacuum degassing and electroslag remelting for ultimate cleanliness. Hot rolling and forging operations are performed within precise temperature ranges to ensure optimal grain structure. Cold working processes include precision drawing, grinding, and machining to achieve tight dimensional tolerances and superior surface finish.
Quality Standards and Testing
MetalZenith maintains strict adherence to JIS G4303 standards and implements comprehensive quality control measures. Every production lot undergoes chemical analysis using optical emission spectrometry, mechanical testing including tensile, hardness, and impact tests, and metallographic examination. Non-destructive testing methods such as ultrasonic inspection and magnetic particle testing ensure internal soundness. Certificate of compliance and test reports are provided with each shipment.
