AISI 304L exhibits a fully austenitic microstructure at room temperature due to its balanced chromium-nickel composition. The low carbon content (≤ 0.030%) significantly reduces the formation of chromium carbides during welding and high-temperature exposure, maintaining corrosion resistance in heat-affected zones. The austenitic structure provides excellent ductility and toughness across a wide temperature range.
Heat Treatment and Processing
MetalZenith employs solution annealing at 1040-1120°C followed by rapid cooling to achieve optimal properties. This treatment dissolves any carbides and provides a homogeneous austenitic structure. Cold working increases strength but reduces ductility, while the material cannot be hardened by heat treatment. Our controlled atmosphere furnaces prevent surface oxidation and ensure consistent results.
Manufacturing Process Excellence
Our production process begins with electric arc furnace melting followed by AOD refining for precise composition control. Continuous casting produces high-quality billets, which undergo hot rolling, solution annealing, and pickling. Cold rolling and precision finishing operations achieve final dimensions and surface quality. Advanced process control systems monitor temperature, atmosphere, and cooling rates throughout production.
Quality Standards and Testing
MetalZenith maintains compliance with international standards including ASTM A240, EN 10088-2, and JIS G4305. Our quality management system encompasses incoming material inspection, in-process monitoring, and final product testing. Chemical composition verification using optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical property testing, intergranular corrosion testing (ASTM A262), and dimensional inspection ensure consistent quality. Non-destructive testing including ultrasonic and dye penetrant inspection is available for critical applications.
