UNS S31254 is a super austenitic stainless steel with a fully austenitic microstructure at room temperature. The high nitrogen content stabilizes the austenite phase and significantly enhances strength and corrosion resistance. The elevated molybdenum and chromium levels provide exceptional resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, with a PREN value exceeding 42.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith applies solution annealing at 1100-1150°C followed by rapid water quenching to achieve optimal properties. This treatment dissolves carbides and ensures uniform austenitic structure. Stress relief annealing at 850-950°C may be applied for welded components to minimize residual stresses without compromising corrosion resistance.
Manufacturing Process
Our production begins with vacuum induction melting of premium raw materials, followed by electroslag remelting for enhanced cleanliness. Hot working is performed between 1050-1200°C with careful temperature control to prevent sigma phase formation. Cold working and intermediate annealing cycles achieve final dimensions and surface quality.
Quality Standards & Testing
Every batch undergoes comprehensive testing including chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical property verification, intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262, and critical pitting temperature determination. Non-destructive testing includes ultrasonic inspection and dye penetrant testing to ensure structural integrity.
Welding & Fabrication
UNS S31254 exhibits excellent weldability using matching filler metals such as ER2594. Pre-heating is not required, and interpass temperature should be maintained below 150°C. Post-weld heat treatment is generally not necessary, but solution annealing may be applied for maximum corrosion resistance in critical applications.
