Metallurgical Characteristics
JIS SUS316 is an austenitic stainless steel with a face-centered cubic crystal structure that provides excellent ductility and toughness. The addition of molybdenum (2-3%) significantly enhances corrosion resistance, particularly against chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. The balanced chromium-nickel composition ensures stable austenitic structure at room temperature and excellent work hardening characteristics.
Manufacturing Process
MetalZenith employs advanced electric arc furnace (EAF) melting followed by argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) refining to achieve precise chemical composition control. The steel undergoes vacuum degassing to minimize hydrogen and nitrogen content, ensuring superior mechanical properties. Hot rolling is performed at temperatures between 1150-1250°C, followed by solution annealing at 1050-1100°C and rapid cooling to prevent carbide precipitation.
Heat Treatment Specifications
Solution annealing is performed at 1050-1100°C followed by rapid cooling in water or air to achieve optimal corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. This treatment dissolves carbides and ensures homogeneous austenitic microstructure. Cold working can increase strength significantly, with yield strength reaching up to 1000 MPa in heavily cold-worked conditions.
Quality Standards & Testing
All JIS SUS316 products manufactured by MetalZenith comply with JIS G4303 standards and undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical property verification through tensile and hardness testing, and corrosion resistance evaluation. Ultrasonic testing and magnetic particle inspection ensure internal soundness and surface integrity. Each batch is supplied with complete mill test certificates and traceability documentation.
