JIS SKH51 is a tungsten-molybdenum type high speed steel with excellent hot hardness and wear resistance. The steel features a complex carbide structure consisting primarily of MC (vanadium carbides), M6C (tungsten-molybdenum carbides), and M23C6 (chromium carbides) distributed in a tempered martensitic matrix. This carbide distribution provides exceptional cutting edge retention and thermal stability up to 600°C.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith's optimized heat treatment involves preheating to 850°C, followed by austenitizing at 1210-1230°C in protective atmosphere. Quenching is performed in oil or air depending on section size, achieving uniform hardness of 64-66 HRC. Triple tempering at 540-580°C reduces hardness to the working range of 62-65 HRC while maximizing toughness and dimensional stability.
Manufacturing Excellence
Our production utilizes electric arc furnace melting with ladle refining, followed by vacuum degassing to minimize hydrogen content and non-metallic inclusions. The steel undergoes controlled cooling and stress relief annealing to achieve optimal machinability in the annealed condition. Advanced ultrasonic testing ensures internal soundness throughout all product forms.
Quality Standards
All JIS SKH51 production meets stringent quality requirements including chemical composition verification by optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical property testing per JIS G4403 standards, and microstructural analysis.
