Product Overview
Metallurgical Characteristics
St14 tool steel features a martensitic microstructure with uniformly distributed carbides after proper heat treatment. The controlled addition of chromium, tungsten, and vanadium creates a fine carbide network that provides exceptional wear resistance while maintaining adequate toughness. The steel exhibits excellent hardenability and dimensional stability during heat treatment processes.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith employs controlled atmosphere hardening at 820-850°C followed by oil or air quenching, depending on section size. Tempering is performed at 150-200°C for maximum hardness or 400-500°C for improved toughness. Sub-zero treatment at -80°C may be applied to reduce retained austenite content and enhance dimensional stability.
Manufacturing Process
Our St14 production utilizes vacuum induction melting followed by electroslag remelting to ensure exceptional cleanliness. Controlled forging operations with precise temperature monitoring optimize grain flow and carbide distribution. Advanced annealing processes prepare the material for subsequent machining and heat treatment operations.
Specialized Quality Testing
MetalZenith conducts comprehensive Rockwell hardness distribution mapping across tool sections, retained austenite content analysis using X-ray diffraction, carbide size and distribution evaluation through metallographic analysis, and rotating beam fatigue strength testing at various stress levels to ensure optimal performance in cyclic loading applications.
Application-Specific Considerations
For cutting tool applications, St14 provides excellent edge retention and thermal stability. In die and mold manufacturing, the steel offers superior surface finish capability and dimensional accuracy. Bearing applications benefit from the material's high contact fatigue resistance and low inclusion content. Precision mechanical components utilize the steel's excellent machinability in the annealed condition and superior wear resistance after hardening. Automotive applications leverage the material's consistent quality and reliable performance under demanding service conditions.
