Product Overview
Metallurgical Characteristics
EN 1.4401 is an austenitic stainless steel with a face-centered cubic crystal structure that provides excellent ductility and toughness. The addition of molybdenum (2-3%) significantly enhances corrosion resistance, particularly in chloride-containing environments. The balanced chromium-nickel composition ensures stable austenitic structure at room temperature while maintaining non-magnetic properties.
Heat Treatment and Processing
Solution annealing is performed at 1050-1100°C followed by rapid cooling to achieve optimal corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. MetalZenith employs controlled atmosphere furnaces to prevent surface oxidation during heat treatment. Cold working can increase strength but may reduce corrosion resistance, requiring subsequent annealing for critical applications.
Manufacturing Process Excellence
MetalZenith's production process begins with carefully selected raw materials melted in electric arc furnaces with AOD refining for precise composition control. Hot rolling is performed within optimal temperature ranges (1150-950°C) to achieve desired mechanical properties. Cold finishing operations include precision rolling, drawing, and machining to meet exact dimensional requirements.
Quality Standards and Testing
All EN 1.4401 products undergo comprehensive testing including chemical analysis by optical emission spectroscopy, mechanical testing per ASTM A370, intergranular corrosion testing per ASTM A262, and ultrasonic examination for internal soundness. Mill test certificates are provided with full traceability documentation.
Corrosion Resistance Performance
EN 1.4401 exhibits superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion with a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of approximately 25. The material demonstrates excellent performance in seawater, organic acids, and many chemical processing environments. Stress corrosion cracking resistance is enhanced compared to standard 304 grades due to molybdenum content.
