Product Overview
Metallurgical Characteristics
JIS NAK80 is a precipitation-hardening mold steel featuring a martensitic matrix strengthened by intermetallic compounds of nickel-aluminum and copper-aluminum. The steel's unique composition provides exceptional dimensional stability during machining and service, with minimal distortion and excellent surface finish capabilities. The pre-hardened condition eliminates the need for post-machining heat treatment, reducing production time and maintaining tight tolerances.
Heat Treatment Process
MetalZenith's proprietary heat treatment process involves solution annealing at 900-950°C followed by controlled cooling and aging at 480-520°C for 4-8 hours. This precise thermal cycle ensures optimal precipitation of strengthening phases while maintaining excellent machinability. The pre-hardened condition achieves 37-43 HRC hardness with uniform distribution throughout the cross-section.
Manufacturing Process Excellence
Our advanced manufacturing process begins with vacuum induction melting (VIM) followed by electroslag remelting (ESR) to achieve superior cleanliness and homogeneity. Controlled forging and rolling operations ensure optimal grain structure and mechanical properties. MetalZenith's computer-controlled heat treatment facilities maintain precise temperature uniformity within ±5°C, ensuring consistent metallurgical properties.
Quality Standards & Testing
Every production lot undergoes comprehensive quality verification including chemical analysis by optical emission spectrometry, mechanical property testing, ultrasonic inspection for internal soundness, and dimensional verification. MetalZenith maintains full traceability from raw materials through final inspection, with certificates of compliance provided for all shipments. Our quality management system complies with ISO 9001:2015, AS9100D, and NADCAP requirements.
Machining & Processing Guidelines
NAK80's excellent machinability allows for high-speed cutting operations with carbide and HSS tooling. Recommended cutting speeds range from 80-150 m/min for roughing operations and 150-250 m/min for finishing. The steel's low work hardening tendency and good chip formation characteristics enable superior surface finishes up to mirror polish quality. Electrical discharge machining (EDM) and electrochemical machining (ECM) processes are highly effective for complex geometries.
